French health system

How to understand the French health system

…what cover do I need and how can I access it for myself and my family?

These are questions faced by many people and we can appreciate this as the French health system can seem very complex.

But it need not be confusing with our English speaking team to help you, within a short time you can have peace of mind knowing that you won’t face the worry of expensive healthcare bills should you become ill or need medication.

Once you become resident in France, it is a legal requirement to be able to pay for the cost of your healthcare. There are different routes that you can take to do this: you may be retired, perhaps you have a salaried job or have your own business. Whichever option you choose, by selecting comprehensive top-up insurance (often called the “mutuelle”) you will be ensuring that the full cost of your healthcare will be covered. There are a range of different policies to suit your needs, situation and your budget.

When you contact SwissLife we will only speak in English and handle any queries you have to put your mind at rest. We manage all aspects of the service for you, which means that we are responsible for claims as well as liaising with colleagues at our Head Office.

The law has recently changed in France which means that it is now easier to change your home or car insurance contract. In simple terms, this means that you are able to cancel a policy whenever you want as long as you have been with your current insurance company for more than a year. As for health insurance you still need to give two months’ notice prior to the renewal date or within 20 days of receipt of the documents.

Backed by SwissLife’s extensive product range, we can offer health insurance at a competitive price – and with generous discounts too. So why use an insurance broker when you can receive comprehensive health cover that protects you and your family directly from us?

Whether you live in Bordeaux or Brittany, Périgueux or Pas-de-Calais, we can help. Contact our friendly team today for a quotation or visit our website and find out more about SwissLife’s products and services, including our Private Banking facilities.

Based in Bordeaux, we are the only SwissLife agency in France to work with English speaking clients. We offer a wide range of Healthcare Insurance and General Insurance solutions backed by one of Europe’s leading Insurance providers.

How to enjoy your holiday stress-free

Planning a holiday or a short break? We all want to have a great time whilst we are away. However, before we leave home for that long-awaited holiday enjoying the sunshine with family or friends, it’s important to ensure not only is our house secure but that it’s properly insured, too.

It’s a worrying thought: but many households in France simply do not have the appropriate amount of insurance cover in place. Although most people sensibly do take out home insurance, they often do not fully understand what is covered and what is not; meaning that should they need to claim in the future, they may not receive the money they thought they were entitled to.

Let’s explain. In France, most home owners have what are called “multi-risk” policies which mean it includes buildings, contents and third party liability insurance. The premium is calculated either on the number of rooms (called “pièces”) or the habitable square metres – the overall size of the property. This is where some problems can occur, because householders can sometimes miscalculate the exact dimensions or incorrectly state the number of rooms in the house. In the event that you do need to make a claim, say due to water damage, an assessor will most likely visit your home to verify the information that is held; and if it does not match the company records you could be out of pocket. For example, if you have 4 Pièce sized property but have only stated 3, you may only receive 75% of the cost of making good the damage.

Some homeowners also spend time away from their home in France, such as in Spain or the UK. Most insurance does not cover you if you leave your property unoccupied for more than 90 days at a time, so check that your policy covers you for this.

Don’t worry – we can help! Our advisors speak English and are able to discuss your insurance requirements, so that whilst you are on holiday or away, you can relax and enjoy a well-earned break: stress-free.

Are you getting the best deal for your health insurance in France?

Good health is important to us all – and when we have issues that affect our health, whether they are short or long-term, it’s vital that we are able to access the care and support that we need. If you’ve lived in France for a while, you will be aware that the French health system works differently to the UK, with the state only paying a proportion of health costs. If you’ve recently moved and presently have no health care cover in place, this is something which you should consider now to avoid potentially expensive medical bills in the future.

In life, there are arguably two things that matter most: health and money. So we would like to show you how we can help you find the best health insurance cover – often referred to as the “mutuelle” or “top-up” – which is appropriate to the needs of you and your family and potentially offers better value for money.

Many people do not realise that under French law, you can switch your insurance cover to another provider. If you would like to review your current health insurance policy we are able to help you – there are requirements to comply with (such as giving two months’ notice prior to the renewal date or within 20 days of receipt of the documents) but we can assist with the paperwork. Because we are an English-speaking agency based in Bordeaux, covering all parts of France, we can communicate with you easily and effectively.

If this is the case, please get in contact, let us know how much you are paying at present and we can provide you with a quotation and breakdown as to how SwissLife compares with your existing contract.

We are proud of the comprehensive cover that SwissLife provides – and with no broker to worry about, we can focus on getting the best deal for you.

Private Banking France

How Swiss Life Private Bank can help you and your family plan your future

What is private banking? At Swiss Life, it’s about personal service above all. We will work with you to understand your financial position and help you plan for the future, carefully managing your assets and investments. In addition to our insurance products and services, Swiss Life Private Banking works similarly to that of a family office; helping you to assess your tax situation, protect and grow your savings and manage and review your investments – all in English.

One of the best tax-efficient ways of preparing for the future, both for you and your family, is with an Assurance Vie policy. It is like a Life Insurance Policy in the UK but with differences, and it also acts as a will. Crucially – and this is a key benefit – you have considerable flexibility with an Assurance Vie as you can cease premium payments, withdraw or add funds whenever you choose, withdraw all the funds or convert the capital into a life-time annuity. Funds are generally either shares or bonds.

The Assurance Vie funds are used to purchase investments – managed funds – which can be tracked and managed easily – allowing you to make changes depending on their performance. You have the option of safe to medium or high risk investments depending on your preference or you can choose to invest 100% capital guaranteed, which gives approximately 2-2.5% interest and is a popular choice.

When you die the underlying investments are sold and the proceeds are transferred to your named beneficiaries, there can be tax advantages so contact us for further information. Another advantage of the Assurance Vie is that you can change the names of the beneficiaries as often as you wish.

If you would like to find out more about how Swiss Life Private Banking can help you and your family plan your future finances, contact us and we shall be pleased to assist you. We operate for clients across France, so whether you live in Carcassonne or Calais, Brittany or the Cote d’Azur, Swiss Life is a solution to your financial and insurance services.

Based in Bordeaux, we are the only SwissLife agency in France to work with English speaking clients. We offer a wide range of Healthcare Insurance and General Insurance solutions backed by one of Europe’s leading Insurance providers.

Health Insurance France

Don’t get caught out with too little home insurance…

Our home is very special to us, don’t you agree? We enjoy time there with friends and family, we eat, sleep, work and relax, with our treasured belongings and furniture all around us. But do you actually know how much your home insurance will cover you for, in the event of say a fire, a theft, vandalism, water damage or glass breakage?

To ensure that you have the appropriate home cover for your property in France, follow these top tips:-

1. Understand your policy. It’s vital you understand what is covered – and what isn’t. With our English speaking service, we will communicate clearly what is included – and deal with any claims as well.

2. Decide on the type of cover you are seeking. For example, are you seeking the equivalent of a “New for Old” cover which will pay for a new replacement or a more standard policy which will reimburse you depending upon the age of the item insured?

3. Excess. How much will you need to pay in the event of a claim?

4. Is accidental damage included? Some policies will not cover you for this, so it’s important to check.

5. Home emergencies. Consider whether you are looking for cover which will assist you in the event of an emergency.

6. Legal expense. This is useful in situations where you need to obtain legal advice, such as following a dispute with a neighbour.

Whatever the level of cover you decide upon, our dedicated team of English speaking advisers will help you through what can be a stressful situation including the management of any claim. Rest assured, we will be there for you; after all, your home is your most precious asset.

Health Insurance France

How does French health cover work?

Understanding how the French health system works can seem very confusing at times. However, if you live in France it’s really important to ensure that you, your partner and your family have the health cover that you need in case you become ill or require medical assistance. If you have permanent residence in France you are entitled to receive healthcare paid by the state – but not all of the costs will be covered. This is why you need to consider taking out “top up” health insurance (or commonly referred to as the mutuelle).

At SwissLife, we can help. When you contact us, don’t worry: we will only speak in English and will deal with any queries that you have quickly to help put your mind at rest. We handle all aspects of the service for you, which means that we are responsible for claims as well as liaising with colleagues at our Head office.

Nearly two-thirds of expats missing out on the best interest rates on savings

The majority of British expatriates never move their money around between savings accounts, meaning they are missing out on potentially thousands of pounds of interest. The survey covered British expats in France. And he most common reason given for not moving was that with rates so low, there was no point in chasing rates. Peter Musto, Consultant at Swisslife’s private Bank said: “Finding a savings account that offers a good return may be more difficult at the moment, but they are available.

What about ?

With the interest rates on Livret A and LDD dropping as low as 1% “In August 2014 and set to go even lower the prospect of making your savings pay, do not appear rosy, “Said Peter illustrating that it is worth shopping around to avoid missing out. For instance, over one-third of the French population has a Contrat d’ Assurance Vie. Around € 1500 Billion is invested in France and it is by far the most popular saving account in France. It is one of the best ways to protect and grow your savings efficiently, with no restrictions on when or how much you can withdraw. The reason that such policies are so popular is because they offer significant inheritance advantages, as well as beneficial tax treatment for any growth and/or additional income generated and far better interest rates. At Swisslife we handle over 25.4 Billion€ of Assets, we offer a wide range of funds among the best in the Market: 565 UCITS among the most representative in the market in terms of, risk and performance.

1200 Stocks and bonds: As part of the premium solutions of expertise, your savings will be invested by Swisslife on bonds in the Eurozone as well as the best value in stock market indices (SBF 120, Dow Jones stoxx 600 or standard & poor’s 500). Euro Funds: This is a guaranteed capital fund. Thanks to the ratchet effect, the performance achieved each year remains definitively acquired. We will advise you on the different options! For example you can have 80% invested in Euro funds (safe/guaranteed capital fund) and 20% on Bonds.

Conclusion

Each customers are different, each savings and investments are personalized. Swisslife received for the second consecutive year, the seal of excellence from the magazine “Les dossiers de l’épargne” This distinction is based both on technical criteria, related to contract specifications and the financial performance of the funds. Chinese puzzle

EDITORIAL: Chinese puzzle

Chinese GDP growth looks set to dip below the government’s “absolute minimum” of 7% this year. The reason is a collapse in exports of nearly 15% in a year, far short of economists’ forecasts, which were even predicting a 9% rebound. China has felt the full force ofcompetition from both the Eurozone and Japan, where, conversely, exports are soaring, driven by the decline of the euro and the yen.
